修士課程や博士課程への進学は、人生の中でも非常に重要な決断の一つだと思います。また、日本への留学という大きな決断をされた方もいらっしゃると思います。

研究室を選ぶ前に、ぜひ一度、大学院での学びを通して自分が何を達成したいのか、そしてこの研究室がその目標に近づくための場になり得るのかを考えてみてください。

教員として、私は学生が学位取得時までに身につけていてほしい最低限のリテラシーや能力について考えてきました。これらを明確にしておくことは、私自身が学生を指導するときの方針や期待値を調整する上でも役立っています。ここで共有する内容が、この研究室が皆さんにとって適した場所かどうかを考える際の参考になれば嬉しく思います。

• 学士課程を修了した学生には、自ら学びながら、自分の目標に応じて優先順位をつけ、課題を解決し、具体的な成果を形にできることを期待しています。

• 修士課程の学生には、学士課程レベルで期待される能力に加えて、自分とは異なる背景や価値観を持つ人たちと柔軟に協働できること、そして解く価値のある問題を見出せることを期待しています。

• 博士課程の学生には、学士課程および修士課程レベルで期待される能力に加えて、多様な視点から問題を捉え直すことができること、そして指導教員や共同研究者などの重要なステークホルダーからのフィードバックを踏まえながら、自立してプロジェクトを推進できることを期待しています。

もちろん、これらはあくまで最低限の期待であり、できればその先を一緒に目指していければと思っています。また、私自身も皆さんがどのような目標や期待を持っているのかを知りたいと思っています。そして、卒業する頃には、私たちが一緒にどこまで成長できるのか、どのようなことに挑戦できるのかを、皆さんと一緒に考えていければ嬉しく思います。

Continuing on to a master’s degree, or even a doctoral degree, is one of the most important decisions you may make in life. Some of you have also made the brave decision to study abroad in Japan.

Before choosing which lab to join, I would like to invite you to take some time to reflect on the goals you hope to achieve through your degree here, and whether this lab can help you move toward those goals.

As a faculty member, I have been thinking about the minimum level of literacy and capability I hope students will develop by the time they complete their degree. Clarifying these expectations also helps me calibrate my mentoring and training approach when working with students. I would like to share them with you, in the hope that they will help you decide whether this lab is the right place for you.

• For students who already hold a bachelor’s degree, I expect them to be able to prioritize tasks according to their goals, learn independently, solve problems, and deliver concrete outcomes.

• For master’s students, in addition to the abilities expected at the undergraduate level, I expect them to be able to work flexibly with people different from themselves and to identify problems worth solving.

• For doctoral students, in addition to the abilities expected at the undergraduate and master’s levels, I expect them to be able to frame problems from diverse perspectives and lead projects independently while taking into account feedback from key stakeholders (e.g., supervisors, collaborators).

Of course, I hope we can aim beyond these minimum expectations. I would also like to learn more about your own goals and expectations, and explore together whether we can aim even higher by the time you graduate from this lab.

Our research focuses on designing information technologies that support people in completing various cognitive tasks and achieving diverse interpersonal goals. You may be a great fit for our lab if you are interested in at least one of the following dimensions:

研究室に参加した後は、私たちはメンターとメンティーの関係になります。その関係において、私が大切にしていることが二つあります。

一つ目は、メンティーと協力してトップレベルの国際会議や国際ジャーナルにフルペーパーを発表することです。これは簡単なことではありませんが、とても挑戦しがいのある目標だと思っています。この点についてお互いの方向性が近いと、より良い協力関係を築きやすいと考えています。

最終的にトップレベルの会議やジャーナルに採択されなくても問題ありません。私が大切だと思っているのは、その過程でさまざまな課題に向き合い、それらを解決しながら、何らかの具体的な成果を形にすることです。そのような経験は、大学院での重要なトレーニングの一つだと考えています。

二つ目は、この関係を通じてお互いが成長することです。理想的には、共同研究を通じて私も皆さんから学び、皆さんも何かを得られるような関係になればと思っています。

もちろん、私の目標に共感し、これから数年間一緒に取り組みたいと思っていただけるのであれば嬉しいです。一方で、そのような目標を共有する人を見つけるのは簡単なことではないとも理解しています。そのため、すべての学生が私と同じ目標を持っているとは考えていません。

だからこそ、この1〜2年程度のメンター・メンティー関係の中で、皆さん自身がどのような目標を持っているのかをぜひ教えてください。例えば、良い就職先を見つけたい、海外留学をしたい、自分にとって心地よい生き方を見つけたい、優しい人でありたい、専門性を高めたい、など、どのような目標でも構いません。

お互いの目標について率直に共有し、それぞれの目標や状況を尊重しながら、楽しく協力して目標達成を目指せる関係を築けたら嬉しいです。

2. Please introduce yourself, share why you want to join this lab, and what you expect to achieve or get after joining this lab. After joining our lab, we become mentor and mentee. In this mentor-mentee relationship, I care about two things. 

One is to work with a mentee to publish a full paper at a top international venue. This is a challenging but exciting task, and it's easier to achieve if we are aligned on this aspect in our mentor-mentee relationship. It is fine that the project ends up not being accepted in a top venue, but what I care about is that we try to solve different problems throughout this process and deliver something concrete, as this is an important part of graduate school training. 

Second, I want to see the growth from each of us in this relationship. Ideally, I hope we can learn from each other during the collaboration. 

It is great that you agree with my goals and want to work with me in the upcoming years. But I also understand that it is difficult to find people who share similar goals, so I do not expect every student to share the same goal with me. That's why I'd like to know what your goal is in this mentor-mentee relationship. 

It can be anything that you want to pursue in this 1- or 2-year mentor-mantee relationship, such as finding a good job, studying abroad, finding an enjoyable way of living, being a kind person, improving expertise, etc. I hope we can be transparent about our goal in this short-term relationship, accommodate each other, and help each other to achieve our goals in an enjoyable way.
